I Am A Drinnie

German-Danish Spring Exhibition, organized by the association KUNST FÜR ANGELN, opens on Sunday, April 19, 2026

With a strong German-Danish collaboration, the non-profit association KUNST FÜR ANGELN e.V. opens the 2026 art year.
The major spring exhibition “I Am a Drinnie” (Drinnie is a nickname for an indoor person) will transform the Wittkielhof near Kappeln into a meeting place for contemporary art, cultural exchange, and new perspectives in the border region between Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark throughout April.

Art Connects – Across Borders
Since its founding in 2022, KUNST FÜR ANGELN e.V. has pursued the goal of sustainably enriching the northernmost region of Schleswig-Holstein with contemporary art and intensifying creative exchange with Danish artists. The geographical proximity to the German-Danish border is deliberately understood as a cultural opportunity: art becomes a unifying element across languages, generations, and artistic positions.

In 2026, this collaboration will be further deepened. In close cooperation with the Sønderjyllands Art School and under the curatorship of Danish artist and art educator Thomas Lunau, the association presents an exhibition that naturally brings together German and Danish perspectives.

“I Am a Drinnie” – A Title That Sparks Curiosity
The unusual exhibition title deliberately opens up a broad space for interpretation. “Drinnies”—a term for people who prefer to stay indoors, within their own comfort zone—symbolically represent social developments that have become increasingly evident, especially since the COVID era. Between withdrawal, self-observation, and renewed inner reflection, the exhibited works reflect contemporary realities of life and personal attitudes.

Today’s “Drinnie” seeks genuine social contact—with “real” people. More and more experts are recognizing that social media are reaching their limits, and that real people are retreating from digitally synthetic worlds back into the analog.

Over 100 artworks form a diverse panorama: works by around 20 Danish artists, pieces from the private Roosen-Trinks collection, loaned works, and—presented publicly for the first time—works by students of the Sønderjyllands Art School. The exhibition is complemented by rotating presentations in Angeln and Sønderb- org, as well as workshops for children led by Danish artists.

Voices on the Exhibition
Ingrid Roosen-Trinks, board member of KUNST FÜR ANGELN e.V., emphasizes:
“Our upcoming exhibition theme ‘I Am a Drinnie’ carries a wealth of associations and interpretations. The works by the young students from Sønderborg fit the theme perfectly and enrich the exhibition tremendously. It is particularly valuable that these young talents are personal- ly present, allowing for direct dialogue with the audience.”

Curator Thomas Lunau adds:
“The title ‘I Am a Drinnie’ opens up so many possibilities for interpretation. The younger generation in particular feels addressed by the term and finds its very own artistic definition of it.”
